While the artist Marcius Simons Pinckney birth date is sometimes in question, he died in 1909 while working as a set designer at the Wagner Theatre in Bayreuth Germany.  A New York City native, spent most of his life living in Europe. He is best known for his allegorical and symbolist paintings as well as cathedrals and dramatic skycaps.  He painted heroic figures such as Joan of Arc.  His formal training began at age 12 at the Vaugirard College in Paris.  He trained under JG Vibert.  He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1882, and then alter turned to idealistic poetic works more influenced by J.M.W.Turner.  He was inspired as much by music, particularly Wagner, as he was by artists.
