Born in Munich in 1900 he lived later in life in Escondido California but is considered one of Chicago's leading artist of the 20th.Century. Wuermer came to Chicago as a young boy and began his studies there at the art institute. He then completed his education at the Chicago art students league under Wellington Jarard Reynolds (1866-1931), who was a well known figure and portrait painter. Wellington recognized that Wuermer was a most gifted student and actually employed him as an assistant on several occasions. In the early 20's Wuermer began to exhibit his paintings drawings and etchings nationally. Equally accomplished at landscape and figure studies he won art awards from such institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago in 1926 and National Academy of design in 1928. , the Carnegie Instit. in 1945 and the Allied Artists of America in 1971. Carl Wuermer was a full member of the Art Inst. of Chicago Alumni and the Allied Artists of America, Illinois Academy of Fine arts salons of American and the Hudson Balley art assc. HIs art is now in the permanent collections of LA County of art the Municpal collection of chicago, amherst college and the IBM Collection.
